No Other Like It
Once when I was feeling a bewilderment about how my team fit in a changing organization, I sought input from a trusted mentor. By the end of the discussion, which lasted less than 30 minutes, I was not only assured that my team had an opportunity to play a vital role in the organization's transition but also admonished for not seeking ways to ensure we were involved at the appropriate levels.
My mentor encouraged me to seek ways to add value rather than artificially asserting the need for involvement and complaining when the invitations didn't come.
Oh so many times we sit feeling like we're bound by the validation or acceptance of others. In some cases, though we know (internally at least) that we have certain obligations, we wait for someone in our lives - oftentimes we don't even know who - to make a way for us or to move out of our way so that we may proceed with doing what is required of us.
Whether it be filling a role in our careers or in our personal lives, we must remove artificial barriers that make us feel like we cannot do what we must to achieve our best in life. When it comes down to our responsibilities (as parents, spouses, etc.) if we wait for others to endorse our moves before we make them, we most times make situations more difficult than they need to be.
We can no more allow external confirmation to dictate our actions than we can force time to bend to our demands. Instead of seeking permission, we must set out with good intentions, clean hearts and the confidence that we can progress towards being who/what we should. If we make (sincere) mistakes along the way, we can only apologize and work to improve.
Just as a flower accepts the sun without prodding from the tree, we too should look for no consent to walk proudly on our path. Find encouragement to be exactly who you were made to be in this life; since you can only be you, find a way to be the best at it.
