Second Chances Exist
In the early part of my career I had a lot of challenges. I recall working at one particular company where I just did not fit in. I couldn't seem to get things right though I was trying my best and my personality clashed with all the wrong people (i.e., the owner and my manager).
Before I knew it, I was called into one of those meetings. You know, the one where you just listen and grit your teeth in disbelief as they read off a laundry list of reasons you can no longer work for them. After 10 minutes of being berated, someone escorted me to my desk to collect my personal effects in an office supply box. I cursed and screamed inside but was determined not to let a tear fall in the wake of my disaster - I would NOT give them the satisfaction.
I'd never been fired and had no idea what my next step would be. At 5 months pregnant, I had a sizable baby bump, an even bigger mortgage and a couple of young crumb snatchers at home already. How was I going to make it? I just KNEW my life was over.
Well, that's at least how it felt then... Today, I have a successful career and that baby bump is now my beautiful 12 year old daughter.
Sometimes we make unbelievable mistakes while at other times we're victims of circumstances beyond our control. In either case, there are moments where we may feel like we're standing in quick sand with concrete shoes on. Hopelessness clouds our vision and we cease believing that anything better is coming down the road for us.
A good book you may be familiar with explains that grace and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives. If you find any truth in that teaching, you must also believe that --though opportunities are not endless -- as long as we still live and breathe, we have a chance to get it right. Though yesterday cannot be rewritten, our tomorrows are yet blank pages begging to be filled with new experiences and triumphs; to become the novel of life as we wish it to be.
During times where you may feel you're at a point of no return, hold on to the belief that with a ration of resilience, a dash of determination and a deposit of diligence, you will make it past your rough patch. You can shape your tomorrow to be as beautiful as your mind's eye can see.
