A New Approach to your New Year’s Resolution
How does the New Year spark a fire in us that didn't exist before? What about January 1, XXXX incites us to boldly declare that we will take action to address a thing that we may have neglected for the prior 365 days of our lives (or longer)?
The New Year seems to be a perfect time for examination of beliefs, motives or actions. It's when we look back over the last few months of our lives or, in some instances; take a long hard look at a particular experience (good or bad) that we feel deserves special attention. We set goals for personal transformation and resolve to improve our lives in some way.
Though not all decisions to improve are centered around a particular date, deciding to better ourselves for the new year or at any point in life is good - especially if it sparks internal growth.
Once we decide we want to change, how can we charge ahead with enough clarity to make a positive, lasting transformation? What keeps us from getting ourselves stuck in a furrow; you know, deliberating so much that we wind up in the dumps, feeling hopeless and retreating from action rather than springing into it?
In other words, we can train ourselves to reflect in short, positive bursts. If practiced regularly, pondering the episodes of our lives - and our roles in those episodes - can help us keep our actions and motivation aligned with our goals.
Through self-reflection, we can determine if we are where we want to be and regroup to stay on track if necessary. Sometimes, we may concede that an idea no longer fits into the bigger picture of our lives. When we think deeply about our lives, we unlock the tools to objectively evaluate ourselves, our situations and our relationships - both personal and professional.
